Chelsea Flower Show

We were thrilled to be asked by Solus Decor to help with the design for their trade stand for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017.  The chance to be part of the hugely prestigious Chelsea Flower Show combined with the opportunity to work with the beautiful fire and water features produced by Solus Decor made this project a complete pleasure from start to finish.

Solus Decor originally started their business in Canada and have been producing their high performance concrete products for nearly 20 years in Canada and have been over in the UK for nearly 3 years.  This was their second year to exhibit their fire and water products at RHS Chelsea. Their pieces are both sculptural and architectural in their design with clean edges that can compliment any outdoor living space. When looking at the original brief we opted for light greys and neutral tones to compliment the contemporary outdoor living space we wanted to create for Chelsea.

We used a composite decking from Silvadec in a light grey to work with the scheme, the flooring was a key decision as not only was the correct colour essential in the design but we had to ensure that the flooring remained anti slip in all weathers given the temperamental English climate.

Chelsea Flower Show is organised by the RHS so it is essential to have a green element to the stand.  We explored a number of options to add the greenery to the stand but space was also a key factor in this.  We were fortunate enough to meet Green Matters UK who very generously agreed to work with us on the stand to create vertical living walls, which were a fantastic solution that complimented the overall scheme perfectly.  We opted for cool blue tones on the water wall and warm reds on the fire wall.

One of the final pieces to bring the final design together was signage.  We were keen to incorporate elements of planting within this to make this bespoke for Chelsea, whilst retaining the Solus brand. After much research we came across The White Bulb who specialise in beautiful handmade letters and signs for wedding and events, having seen some beautiful succulent lettering they make we approached them about the bespoke project.  The letters are all handmade and given the size of the letters, the largest being 70 cm in height this truly was a labour of love. We couldn't be happier with the final product!

The Grand Shed Project @ Grand Designs Live

Creating the Boutique Bedroom in the Grand Shed Project

You may have seen a few snippets on social media about the Grand Shed Project at Grand Designs Live this week. We have been busy with preparations for this over the last few weeks.  We were selected with 4 other designers to transform a traditional garden shed into an inviting space of our choice.  Our design was a boutique bedroom, an extension of your home and a space where you could feel proud to host overnight guests.

The shed in question was supplied by Walton's Garden Buildings, a 10 x 8 Waltons Tradesman Tongue and Groove Double Door Apex Wooden Shed.

We had access to the sheds from midday on Wednesday to begin the transformation for the opening of Grand Designs Live on Saturday.

The initial work all involved painting, which instantly changed the look and feel of the shed.  We used Valspar Masonry paint, suitable for wood and brickwork.  This paint has excellent coverage and is touch try within 1 hour.  These were key factors to helping us get everything completed on time.  The colour scheme for the space was cool and calming tones and to achieve this we used Blanc de Blanc on the main walls and ceilings and Driftwood Blues as an accent tone to the back wall and doors.

To transform the flooring and make it feel warm and inviting we installed Quickstep Impressive laminate in Saw Cut Oak Grey, which is an interlocking system making it simple and quick to install.  Once the flooring and painting was completed there was a huge transformation in the look and feel of the space.

Fixtures and Fittings

Walls painted and flooring in we could set about installing the shelving, artwork, furniture and accessories.  We were fortunate enough to work with some great suppliers on this project who enabled us to completely transform the shed.

We've had great fun working on this unusual project for Grand Designs Live and thank you to Axa who have sponsored the Grand Shed Project.  If you would like to see the boutique bedroom and the other designs in the Grand Shed Project there's still time to visit Grand Designs Live this weekend.
